Commit to less plastic waste.

International Plastic Free Day falls on May 25th every year. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness about plastic waste. Since the plastic ban came into effect, the banned plastic disposable products are found less often in nature. The public body Bonaire is therefore looking further into the policy to phase out more plastic disposable products.

On Bonaire, a lot of plastic litter is found on both beaches and in neighborhoods. For example, in 2020, more than 70% of litter at Te Amo Beach consisted of plastic. In two years, almost ten thousand cigarette filters (which contain plastic) were found. Many plastic straws, cutlery, plates and caps were also found during this time. In 2020, plastic straws, cups and bottles were mainly seen in public places.

To help reduce plastic waste on Bonaire, a ban on single-use plastic came into effect in 2022. Since June 1, 2022, it is forbidden to use disposable carrier bags, straws, stirrers and cutlery made of plastic. And since August 1, 2022, it is prohibited to sell disposable Styrofoam meal packs. This means that you can no longer buy these products in the supermarket and are no longer offered at restaurants, bars, hotels or other companies.

Help keep Bonaire clean.

On May 25th, everyone is encouraged to avoid using single-use plastic as much as possible. Always remember to use reusable products as much as possible. If you do use disposable products, dispose of the plastic waste separately and in the correct waste bin. On May 25th, select supermarkets will be offering a reusable shopping bag for purchases over $50.

We are proud of our island and nature. Together we make Bonaire plastic-free!
