Sunfish World Championships
September 14, 2019 - September 25, 2019
Bonaire is proud to host the 2019 Sunfish World Championships
From September 14th through September 20th, 2019, the best Sunfish sailors from around the world will come to Bonaire to battle it out and show who is best.
From the September 21st through September 25th, 2019, the Masters (several categories in the age of 40 and beyond) and the Youth (U19) will take the waters to show their skills.
There will be 72 brand new boats, sails and trollies on Bonaire so as to level the playing field. Everyone will sail with identical equipment, leaving only one variable, the talent of the sailor to determine who is the fastest. The boats will launch from the beach at Plaza Resort. The competition will be in the bay directly in front for basically no transit times to and from the course, with great visibility for spectators from the beach at Plaza Resort, Te Amo Beach, or Windsock (Donkey Beach).
The official opening of week 1 for the “Open” category will take place on Sunday, September 15 at 7 PM in the Tipsy Seagull, preceded by a Flag Parade with all 72 participants from 11 countries. The Island Governor will perform the opening. There is a practical race on Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock. The World Championship races are on September 16th, 17th, 18th, and 20th, from 9:00 AM through 1:00 PM. On all race days there is a prize-giving ceremony around 2:00 PM directly after the races. On Friday, September 20, the Final Award ceremony takes place in the evening at 7:00 PM.
In week 2, the Opening for the Youth & Masters will take place on Sunday, September 22nd at 7:00 PM in the Tipsy Seagull. The practical race is on Sunday, September 22nd at 2:00 PM. The World Championship races are on September 23rd, 24th, and 25th, from 9:00 AM through 1:00 PM. On race days there will again be an award ceremony immediately after the races. The Final Award ceremony is also on Wednesday, September at 25th, 7:00 PM in the Tipsy Seagull.
