The ritual and tradition of San Juan and San Pedro
The Nos Zjilea event has a fusion of local arts and crafts, plants and vegetables, and educational presentations. Enjoy the delicious food while listening to some of the best local musicians as they play live at Mangazina di Rei terrace.
The celebration of San Juan and San Pedro respectively takes place annually on June 24 and 29. On these days, everyone with the name Juan or Pedro, or names derived from these two, such as Juanita, Johana, Wancho, John, Pedro, Peter, Petra, receives a visit at the house. The homeowner makes the necessary preparations while waiting for a group of musicians to give a serenade. Even today, this tradition takes place in the neighborhoods of Rincon, Nort Saliña, and Nikiboko.
This edition of the cultural event Nos Zjilea has the theme, “The Ritual and Tradition of San Juan and San Pedro.” After the educational program, the group of youngsters, Ayo Mundu, will give a demonstration, along with their trainer, Nel Piar, of the serenade that takes place during the period of San Juan and San Pedro, so that tourists and visitors may get acquainted and fully appreciate this remarkable tradition.
Mr. Nochi Coffie from SKAL will share his knowledge and experience about the torch and the practice of jumping over the fire during this celebration. During San Juan and San Pedro, men drink a lot–the main drink during this traditional time is called kukui. Mrs. Jenny Crestian will give a presentation on exactly how this delicious drink is made.
Several of our elderly people from the daycare Villa Antonia will tell stories about their own fun times from the past. To commemorate this special occasion, Mr. Giovanny Mercera will take everyone back in time with his memorable songs from the 1980s.
As always, the cultural market will be active with a variety of locally produced, fresh products, like local gourd syrup, natural fruit juices “Made in Rincon,” local delicacies, local art, and much more. The kitchen opens at 10:00 AM and the smells coming from the kitchen will whet your appetite to taste-test the different local dishes throughout the afternoon. For this edition of Nos Zjilea, there will be a live performance by the local band, JC & Friends.
