Nos Zjilea Cultural Event
July 27 @ 8:00 am - 2:00 pm AST$3.00
The Nos Zjilea event has a fusion of local arts and crafts, plants and vegetables, and educational presentations. Enjoy the delicious food while listening to some of the best local musicians as they play live at Mangazina di Rei terrace. All presentations are presented in Papiamentu and translated into English.
This month’s event will focus upon agriculture and animal husbandry. Our ancestors were people who were always concerned with the countryside. Healthy living was essential for the daily routine of the Bonairean. In addition to livestock, various fruits and vegetables were grown, such as watermelon, cucumber, pumpkin, tomato, and okra. Here on Bonaire, there were several plantations, such as Dos Pos or Fontein, that produced many fruits and vegetables in the past. Without the harvest, there is no harvest celebration. Nowadays there are many young people, just like Bonaire’s elders, who are passionate about agriculture, and some of these will share their experience with us at our upcoming cultural event “Nos Zjilea,” with the hope that more people will plant fruits and vegetables and keep livestock for their own food supply.
On Saturday July 27th, the next edition of the cultural event “Nos Zjilea” will take place at Cultural Park Mangazina di Rei. This month’s theme is “Local Agriculture and Animal Husbandry.” One of Bonaire’s elders, who was raised in the countryside, will come to share his experience with us about the rural life of the past.
The goat plays a prominent role in the provision of rural life needs. Meat was always very expensive, which is why an effort was made to use all parts of the goat, so nothing went to waste. This effort produced foods as well as drinks, such as goat milk and meat. This Saturday, our locally known Elmer “Toyan” Frans from the meat sector will come to share his experience with us about goat breeding.
In recent years, Bonaire’s nature has experienced many changes and developments which affect everyone living on the island. Yet, there are people who work tirelessly on maintaining our nature on a daily basis. During the event “Nos Zjilea,” we are delighted to host Echo Foundation, who will give a presentation on their reforestation efforts.
Time passes so quickly that we do not dwell on the fun times we have experienced. To recall nice memories, Mr. Robert Sancez, with his memorable, romantic songs from the 80s brings us back to the past.
The cultural market will be active with a variety of locally produced, fresh products, like local gourd syrup, natural fruit juices “Made in Rincon,” local delicacies, local art, and much more. The kitchen opens at 10:00 AM and the smells coming from the kitchen will whet your appetite to taste-test the different local dishes throughout the afternoon.
Enjoy all this in the cozy atmosphere at Mangazina di Rei Cultural Park with a live performance by our local steel band “Silver Bullet.” Don’t miss this next opportunity to connect with Bonaire’s culture and history at Nos Zjilea, the cultural event of Bonaire, on Saturday, July 27 from 8:00 AM through 2:00 PM at Mangazina di Rei Culture Park.
