Nos Zjilea Cultural Event
April 27 @ 8:00 am - 3:00 pm AST$3.00
The Nos Zjilea event has a fusion of local arts and crafts, plants and vegetables, and educational presentations. Enjoy the delicious food while listening to some of the best local musicians as they play live at Mangazina di Rei terrace.
This month’s theme is all about the harvest celebration and local traditional food. All presentations are presented in Papiamentu and translated into English.
The Harvest Celebration & Traditional Dishes The entire island of Bonaire was once used as a government plantation. During the harvest period, there were various customs associated with the seasonal celebration. During those years, the population was fed with everything that nature offered, both plants and animals. There is a local saying, “Without the harvest, there is no Simadan.” In those early years, there were no refrigerators or freezers in which to store meat, but what was (and still is) abundant on Bonaire is the sun. To this day, “kunukus” (small farms or ranches) are still found in Bonaire’s countryside. Several of our ancestors who were born on kunukus maintained the various traditional dishes of that lifestyle, and these are still available today.
The group, Kanta Orkidia, will give a demonstration on how to make a delicious pancake from sorghum. In addition, see how the island’s earlier inhabitants peeled a cactus to make cactus soup. Mr. Panfilo Mercera will give a demonstration of how salted goat meat was prepared for a celebration in the traditional way. Come and experience all these feasting traditions at the Cultural Park Mangazina di Rei.
Following the educational program of Nos Zjilea, the group of youngsters called Ayo Mundu will give a presentation in combination with the local band Grupo Tutti Frutti, and the group, Kanta Orkidia, will return to talk about the rural life of the past. In addition, the local band, Grupo Tutti Frutti, will also present its latest hits. Don’t miss this ideal opportunity!
Throughout this event, other musical presentations will be given, including live performances by the local band, Grupo Esso, and a guest band performance by Grupo Den Dam, direct from Curacao. A special part of the program is dedicated just for kids when Wanika Games will introduce their games to the public, the perfect opportunity for your child to be one of the first to participate. There’s no better way to begin the special festival ambiance while awaiting the famous Dia di Rincon. The cultural market will be active with a variety of locally produced, fresh products, like local gourd syrup, natural fruit juices “Made in Rincon,” local delicacies, local art, and much more. The kitchen opens at 10:00 AM and the smells coming from the kitchen will whet your appetite to taste-test the different local dishes throughout the afternoon.
