Dia di Rincon (Rincon Day), when everyone gathers together to celebrate Bonaire!
Each year on April 30th, everyone on Bonaire sets their compasses north to Rincon, to enjoy the locals’ rendition of Dia di Rincon. This year was a very special event, celebrating 30 years of this cultural and fun pageant.
The people of Rincon start work very early in the year to prepare the town for the masses of people who will visit each year. There are a number of smaller events, all of which lead up to the culmination, where everyone gets together for a good time!
The faces of Dia di Rincon.
This special day is when everyone is involved–old and young, visitor and resident. Everyone becomes a Rincoñero for one day. Ladies in flowing dresses pass by, gents in straw hats bow as you pass, it brings to mind days gone by of Bonaire’s early times before the era of mobile phones and texting. Well, almost. There were certainly lots of phones in the crowd, all busy with chronicling the colorful pageantry.
Enjoy this short video of today’s celebration.
And for those on Bonaire, remember there’s still time! The event will run through midnight tonight, and probably into the wee hours!
