Why considering one of Bonaire’s small and intimate boutique resort is a great option.

Many of Bonaire’s visitors decide to stay at one of the larger, full-service resorts, especially when booking their first or second visit to the island. However, once those same visitors see how easy it is to get around the island, many times they begin to look for smaller, more intimate accommodations for their return visits.

The boutique resort experience is very different from the large resort experience. While many are fans of the resort vacation where every whim is catered to, others find that they enjoy the more personable experience they find at a boutique resort.

What is a boutique resort?

Typically, boutique resorts or hotels on Bonaire are smaller, offering between 3 and 25 rooms, which allows the staff to offer more personalized service.  At boutique resorts, you’ll have a one-on-one relationship with the staff.  They will know you by name, and probably know your likes or dislikes within a day or two, thus allowing them to cater your lodging experience to your preferences–and you’ll definitely feel pampered.

What are the advantages of a small resort on Bonaire?

Once a Bonaire visitor feels the urge to try out a small resort, they may find friends for life. Bonaire’s small resorts are located all around Bonaire, so finding one that fits within your budget, offering your preferred amenities, or in close proximity to planned activities will be easy.

  • You’ll find less congestion at a small resort.  This could very well translate into a more relaxing vacation which is more like a “home-away-from-home” experience. There is plenty of space for everyone, so finding lounge chairs by the pool is never a problem.
  • You’ll find more of a local feel, as many small resorts may be family-operated.  You’ll be living more like a local, which many visitors find appealing.
  • Boutique resorts offer a limited number of room units, so each one might be distinct in architecture, furnishings, and color schemes. Some will be modern and trendy, while others are more romantic, and some are downright luxurious. With different themes for each room, it might feel like a unique stay every time you check in!

Bonaire’s small inns and intimate resorts.

Small resorts started appearing on Bonaire’s tourism scene more than 20 years ago, and, through the years, they have expanded and now can be found filling every niche–luxury to economy, activity-focused to laid-back relaxation, and everything in between.  Here are some of Bonaire’s most popular small resorts.

Carib Inn has been a popular oceanfront resort for many years, with a very loyal following.  In fact, during peak times, it’s hard to get a reservation unless you book well in advance!  With only 11 units, it is one of those priceless jewels for those who SCUBA dive.  The entire dive staff is trained to the PADI Instructor level, and many have been with Carib Inn for over 20 years.  It’s like seeing family every time you return.

Carib Inn remains one of Bonaire's most popular of ocean-front small resorts.

Bruce provides an honest-value-for-dollar pricing of Carib Inn’s rooms and diving, but also excellent service is provided through personal attention to all of its guests. Each year, upgrades and renovations are completed, so the resort stays current and can provide nearly all the amenities of near-by large resorts.  This year there is a brand new locker room, and a complete rebuild and upgrade of one of their dive boats, rinse tanks have been tiled to provide a cleaner wash, there are two brand new L&W silent compressors, and new dive tanks in use.

Last-Minute Specials

Because the Carib Inn is so popular and has a high rate of returning guests, many times it is sold out well in advance. However, cancellations do occur, often allowing last-minute bookings.  Be sure to bookmark Carib Inn’s “Last-Minute Openings” page on their website, and check it if you are making plans on short notice.  Carib Inn’s seasonal specials are also listed on this page.

Windhoek Resort Bonaire

Windhoek Resort is a relatively new small accommodation, conveniently located on the southern leeward shore, so it’s convenient to kiters and windsurfers.  But divers and leisure travelers will also enjoy its casual luxury.  The property offers either one- or two-bedroom villas.

Windhoek Resort offers luxury in a laid-back setting.

A primary theme at Windhoek is eco-travel, so towel and linen service is available upon request every three days.  The villa will be serviced at the same time.  Each villa offers luxurious furnishings and is equipped with everything you will need.  As is common on Bonaire, there is plenty of relaxing outdoor areas to enjoy the ultimate in island living.  With the steady winds in this southern location, there is hardly ever the need for the use of air-conditioning, but it is available should one desire it.

Don’t miss Mezze while on Bonaire! We visited Mezze with friends and had a delicious meal. “Mezze” like “tapas” means “small plates” and all of the apps were outstanding: hummus, falafel, tabouleh, and baba ghanous, which we lapped up with homemade pita, forks and fingers.
