Bonaire’s Rincon Boyz & Jeon Celebrate Antillean Culture

Bonaire's Rincon Boyz sing Ta Mi Hendenan

Bonaire’s Rincon Boyz and Jeon help celebrate Dia di Rincon (Rincon Day) virtually!

Tomorrow is Bonaire’s Dia di Rincon (Rincon Day), a day when everyone stops what they are doing to congregate in Bonaire’s most historic town, Rincon.  With a 30-year tradition, sadly last year and this year, the festivities were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic measures which still restrict large gatherings of people.

But the spirit of Bonaireans, both those born here and those who have adopted this island as their home, cannot be quelled!  Instead, we shall celebrate the uniqueness of Bonaire’s culture virtually.

Bonaire’s Rincon Boyz collaborate with Jeon on Ta Mi Hendenan.

An excellent place to start is with a video clip launched late last year where Bonaire’s Rincon Boyz collaborated with the Aruban singer/songwriter, Jeon. These musicians and dancers are just what the doctor has ordered–they will immediately transport you virtually to Bonaire to celebrate Rincon Day, providing a respite from the problems and frustrations of the past, difficult year.

Music and dance have long been cultural traditions on Bonaire, steeped in the island’s history going back centuries.  The focus of Rincon Day itself is to remember this historical culture from agricultural days when Bonaire’s inhabitants had to create their own entertainment.

This song, aptly named Ta Mi Hendenan (My People), is the epitome of Bonaire’s music and dance culture, with many of the musical rhythms represented–Wals, Tambu, and Simadan.  A small rap session is included to bridge the era from days gone by to modern times.

Celebrate Rincon Day 2021 online!

Bonaire’s island government realizes the importance of this annual festival, and even though we cannot enjoy the day with each other, we can still honor the timeless traditions of Dia di Rincon (Rincon Day).

The virtual culture program, Mi kultura t’e kos, will be available from 1:00 PM through 7:00 PM, local time, via the Facebook page of Mi kultura t’e kos.

Felis Dia di Rincon!  Happy Rincon Day!
