Xtreme mountain biking requires Xtreme athletes.
For the seventh year, Bonaire will once again host its version of the Duo Xtreme Mountain Biking challenge and competition on October 23, 2016. There are two routes, a “pro” route of 50 kilometers, and an “Xtreme” route of 76 kilometers.
Bike Trails can be difficult and taxing.
This is true mountain bike “trekking” on Bonaire, as the routes cover mostly dirt trails with a lot of climbing and descending. Given the long distances, tropical heat, and the trails, this challenge is not for the faint of heart.
With the Xtreme, it always takes two to tango!
Because of the inherent challenges, this race is always a “duo” race, with teams of two competing. Both team members must cross the finish line to have their time tallied, and no one can assist the team. If you have a flat tire? Bad luck! Fix it en route!
Safety is always a primary concern.
There are five water stations along the way where participants can replenish their water or sports drink. Since there might be areas which cross vehicular traffic, the police and volunteers will be assisting those on bikes with traffic crossings.
Crossing the finish line!
For many participants, it’s all about finishing, whether it be first or last. But there is also a financial gain by winning, as there are some excellent cash prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams.
For visitors, it’s an early Sunday morning, but it’s quite fun to watch the start of the race. Be at the north entrance of Divi Flamingo Beach Resort & Casino for the 6:30 starting gun!
