Kids’ Activities on Bonaire
Bonaire has always been a great place for families to vacation. Youngsters can enjoy almost all of the same activities right along with their parents.
Kids Can Enjoy SCUBA and Snorkeling
SCUBA diving is about the only sport with an age restriction, 10 years old for Jr. Certification, so many of the resorts have instituted programs tailored for the younger set. In addition to the fun programs below, many of the dive operators are offering SASY – Supplied Air Snorkeling for Youths. The gear is similar to SCUBA gear but is made to fit children starting at age 5. The child-sized BCD keeps the child at the surface while a mini tank with regulator and gauge supply air. Great for those little divers that just can’t wait to join Mom and Dad.
Kids Can Learn to Windsurf From Nearly Any Age
Kids as little as three years of age can begin learning to windsurf. The conditions at Lac Bay provide a safe area in which to learn. Special boards and sails are available for children.
The fringing reef which surrounds Bonaire is a National Marine Park from the high water mark down to a depth of 200 feet/60m. Every diver who has not dived on Bonaire within the last calendar year must attend a diver orientation dealing with Bonaire Marine Park regulations and information. These orientation sessions are usually held at around 9:00 AM the morning after you arrive on Bonaire, and you are required to attend and to obtain your Marine Park tag, which is necessary to legally dive in Bonaire’s waters. The cost of the tag is US$25, and proceeds help support park management and services.
