Markets on Bonaire
If you're more interested in cooking for yourself, Bonaire has a number of large and small markets where you can find much of what you may need to make a killer chili, some nice pasta dishes, and more. In addition to the more formal market stores such as Top Supermarket (located in downtown Kralendijk) or Warehouse Bonaire or the van den Tweel Supermarket, (both located on the way to the airport from town), the largest supermarkets on Bonaire, there are also a few more informal ones. In particular, near the Town Pier, you'll usually find that Venezuelan produce merchants have set up shop in a covered pavillion, and you can usually find fresh produce here - literally right off the boat (and before that, the farm). Practice your Spanish a little before shopping here if you want to get the best price.
Fresh fish is also available on Bonaire, with Wahoo or Dorado being sold for as little as US$6.00 a pound. However, the fish sellers work out of their homes, and don't always have fish available, nor are always in. Ask a local when you get here on how to find a local fish seller. We've found that the best time of the day to go is usually between 5 and 6pm, because the fishermen have usually come back by then with their catches.
Aletta's Semper Kontentu local handmade goat cheese is made fresh daily and can be bought in local supermarkets and is found on the menu of several local restaurants.
