Special Olympics Bonaire

Special Olympics Bonaire has been serving the community since 1990.

The mission of Special Olympics Bonaire is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with mental retardation, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families and other Special Olympics athletes, as well as the community. The Special Olympics Team in Traditional Bonaire Dress

The goal of Special Olympics is to help bring all persons with mental retardation into the larger society under conditions whereby they are accepted, respected and given the chance to become useful and productive citizens.

We have fielded teams for the past three world games and we are looking forward to attending the next World Games from October 10-19, 2007, in Shanghai, People's Republic of China.

Special Olympics was founded on the belief that people with mental retardation can, with proper instruction and encouragement, learn, enjoy and benefit from participation in individual and team sports.

Special Olympics believes that consistent training is essential to the development of sports skills, and that competition among those of equal abilities is the most appropriate means of testing these skills, measuring progress, and providing incentives for personal growth.

Special Olympics believes that through sports training and competition, people with mental retardation benefit physically, mentally, socially and spiritually; families are strengthened; and the community at large, both through participation and observation, is united in understanding people with mental retardation in an environment of equality, respect and acceptance.
