When the Spanish first came to Bonaire in 1499, they
brought priests to the island to christianize the
Indians living here. In 1636, the Dutch took over
Bonaire, and in 1776, two churches were built on the
island, one in Antriol and the other in Rincon.
The
Dutch Catholic priest started to teach the slaves
who were living in Rincon. The first church here was
built at Para Mira, a place where you have
a beautiful view of the village. In 1827, Pastor Eisebeil
completed minor renovations to the church at Para
Mira, as it was a primitive building.
In
1837, Father Smit started the project of building
a church of stones in the center of Rincon. Volunteers
brought huge stones from the surrounding areas to
build their church, and while they carried the heavy
stones, they were singing.
In
1858, Rincon became a parish, and Father Jaonnes te
Welscher, who came from Doetinchem, Holland, started
to enlarge the church, with the assistance of his
parisoners.
In
1907, however a hurricane destroyed this church, and
after it was rebuilt, the church was consecrated to
San Luis Bertran.
Seventy
years later, from 1977 through 1979, Pastor Alcivar
started with his plan to restore the church. The walls
and the roof had to be renovated and a new tower was
built at the side.
Finally,
In 1984 during the tenure of Father Vasques, the project
was completed, and now the Catholic Church of Rincon
is a beautiful church for the residents of Rincon
and is viewed as a historical monument.
