The Bonaire Dive Festival

Kralendijk, Bonaire – (February 4, 2005) – The Bonaire Dive Festival began in 1997 during the International Year of the Reef, with the primary goal of providing a platform through which the island could reinforce its positioning as a pioneer in environmental conservation and divers and snorkelers could experience firsthand the island’s natural treasures and find out what they could do to help protect them. Over the years the Festival attracted hundreds of participants from around the world and fulfilled the initial objective as a public relations tool. Over the eight years of the festival it generated millions of dollars worth of publicity in consumer broadcast, print and electronic media including Fox TV, Scuba TV, Scuba Diving Magazine and Caribbean Travel & Life, CNN.com, About .com,The New York Times, Chicago Tribune and Miami Herald.

The Dive Festival has proven to be a PR success and has drawn many dive lovers to the island. However, trends change and moreover Bonaire, in its drive for continuous improvement, feels that it is time to take a step back and reevaluate the Dive Festival. The latter will also enable Bonaire and stakeholders to brainstorm on an improved concept whereby significant investment by all parties will be maximized. The efforts outlined do require time, therefore the decision has been made – unfortunately – to take this year to renew and reschedule the event for 2006.

The Tourism Corporation Bonaire takes the opportunity to thank the following organizations, which have been instrumental to this event including Air Jamaica, the airline partner for all eight years, the participating tour wholesalers, hotels, restaurants, STINAPA, the Marine Park and the people of Bonaire. A special word of gratitude goes to the founding partners: CORAL (The Coral Reef Alliance) and Scuba Diving Magazine.

Bear in mind that even though the Dive Festival will not take place this June, this is still a great time to visit the easy vacation island.
