Least Tern Artificial Island A Resounding Success
September 16, 2014 @ 14:49

The Least Tern breeding season was a special occasion this year.  Cargill, in cooperation with STINAPA Bonaire, IMARES and DROB, constructed an artificial island in an area to the south of Bonaire which is very important for the migratory birds that visit Bonaire. The artificial island had wooden decoys placed to attract the terns and also rocks and pipe shelters for the chicks to hide from predators.

There’s Another Opportunity to Enjoy a Guided Sunset Hike to the Top of Bonaire
September 9, 2014 @ 15:12

Last May a select few individuals, who got their reservations in quickly, enjoyed a rare moment--sitting at the top of Brandaris, Bonaire’s highest point, at sunset.  Normally, Washington Slagbaai National Park closes at 5:00 PM each day, so being able to hike in the late afternoon, and enjoy the sunset from Brandaris, was a rare opportunity.  Now, there is another chance for those who missed the hikes in May, as STINAPA is planning another sunset hike to Brandaris on Saturday, September 27th, 2014.

You've just found the best site for all sorts of information about the island of Bonaire, located in the Dutch Caribbean.

The InfoBonaire site is managed and maintained locally on Bonaire, which guarantees you the most current information about Bonaire, and it's hosted on U.S. servers to provide speedy response time.

Bonaire is a small island located in the southern Caribbean (see the maps) known for its pioneering role in the preservation of nature, in particular the preservation of the marine environment, and for its excellent scuba diving, snorkeling, and windsurfing, among other things. Kayak in the mangroves, the gentle bay or venture out into the open ocean for a real challenge. Enjoy the nature of the land cycling or mountain biking.

Many descriptions and slogans have been written about Bonaire: Best Kept Secret, Unhurried, Unspoiled, Unforgettable; Diver's Paradise; and the list goes on... The fact is that all these statements are true, and then some. Another truth is the statistic that over 55% of arrivals on Bonaire are repeat visitors!

There are a number of reasons people visit our island. First timers generally have heard about the climate, the water, the sun and what there is to do. When asked, repeat visitors generally say that they did not have enough time to do all they wanted to on their first visit. If it is the third or fourth trip, the answer is basically the same but with this addition "It is the warmth and friendliness of the people" that keeps visitors returning year after year.

Bonaire has the reputation of being laid back, slower paced and very tranquil. The good news is that while this is all quite true, the island also offers a lively nightlife, fun places to visit and world class restaurants. When you first come to the island, you are a visitor, but when you leave, you are a friend.

We invite you to select one of the links at left above or below to discover Bonaire for yourself. If you're looking for something specific, use our search form. If you want news about Bonaire, visit our Island News page.

To help you find your way around the site and around Bonaire, we've provided several key category pages for you to use to get at the specific information you are looking for. These category pages are accessible via the menu at left above, as well as the links at the bottom of this page.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

Calendar covers the latest happenings on Bonaire, from the present through months from now, so you can best plan your schedule to include these upcoming island-wide events in which both tourists and locals can participate. Or see what is happening on a regular basis like nature slideshows on the Weekly page.

Two sections - Travel Tips and Local Information provide all the basic information you need about Bonaire, from maps and photos, to an overview of the ecology and technology. We've also included an on-line phone book of handy Bonairean numbers to have.

What about having fun? Activities covers all the forms of recreation on Bonaire, and can help you locate a good dive operator, who to call to rent a windsurfing equipment, where the best beaches are, where to cycle,  and what to do for evening entertainment. And of course, what Bonaire is known for is covered extensively - scuba diving and snorkeling.

Eating - need we say more? The Restaurant page provides information on all Bonairean restaurants, with cuisines ranging from Italian and Lebanese to Antillean, American, and Indonesian. Trying to economize? This page also links you to information on where to get groceries so you can cook for yourself. Those interested in making informed decisions on what type of seafood to eat while dining on Bonaire can view the Sustainable Seafood Guide.

If you're looking for cool Bonairean art, jewelry, souvenirs, or even more mundane things like appliances, our Shopping page will guide you in the right direction.

Of course, if you're coming to Bonaire to visit or stay, you're going to need a roof over your head (the local police frown on sleeping on the beach), so our Accommodations page will offer you a current list of hotels, condos, guest houses, inns, resorts, apartments, and even pointers to local real estate offerings in case you're looking for something a little more permanent. We divided up accommodations by general price range based on one room night for two people, but you may find better prices through tour operators when purchasing a complete package.

Enjoy one of Bonaire's famous sunsets!

Getting to Bonaire can unfortunately be a challenge sometimes, and once you're here, you definitely need a set of wheels (Bonaire is a small island, but not small enough to walk everywhere). This will link you to the various airlines, car rental companies, tour companies, taxi services, and bike & scooter purveyors so you can find just what you need.

If you want more detailed information on all aspects of Bonaire - above and below water, be sure to visit our on-line Bookstore, where we feature a number of hand-picked books about Bonaire and topics related to Bonaire's dedication to maintaining a sound environment.

Life on Bonaire is slow and relaxing!

Finally, in the event we somehow haven't covered a topic you're interested in more information on, we invite you to visit our Contact Us page, where you can send us any question you have on Bonaire, and we'll do whatever we can to provide you with a timely answer.

Life on Bonaire, while slow and relaxing, still continues to move forward. As such, the site will continue to be expanded with new and updated information on a regular basis. If there's something you think that's missing, drop a note to our Webmaster.
